Spiritual Digital Wellness Framework™

In the 1990s Catholic priest, Henri Nouwen, was befriended by spiritual journalist and writer, Fred Bateman, who ask if Nouwen could write a spiritual book that stripped away the religious vernacular and trappings can hinder those experiencing spiritual yearnings but who are not necessarily connected to a religious tradition or faith practices. Nouwen shared his reflection on our human struggles, spirituality, and God in the everyday world in his book, Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World. In the book’s conclusion, Bateman tells Nouwen he appreciated his book, but the questions that remained for him were:

  1. Who is God?

  2. Who am I?

  3. How can I give my life meaning?

  4. How do I get faith?

How do humans respond to these universal questions today in a technology driven world? The challenge of being fully human in relationship to our screened devices in this AI digital age grows each day. We have become attached to our devices, as our devices have become attached to us. This constant digital attachment causes a profound sense of fragmentation, obscuring our connection to our spiritual selves and the physical world while impeding our ability to make meaning in our everyday existence.

The Spiritual Digital Wellness Framework pilot will be launched in Fall 2027 in partnership with Sophia Seminary and The School of Global Citizenry. Sign up to learn more about this program.

The Spiritual Digital Wellness Framework (SDWF) is focused on providing chaplains, spiritual care providers, and faith leaders with the tools to alleviate the digital distress and existential trauma in a world increasingly shaped by our screens, social media, and AI.
